Ukraine, two years after: the continued commitment of the Order of Malta
24/02/2024

Two years ago, the Russian army attacked Ukraine: since then, 6.4 million people have fled abroad, 14.6 million are in need of assistance and 3.7 million are internally displaced. Military force still prevails over diplomacy, despite the increasing calls for peace. In the third year of the war, the situation is changing. Russia’s aggression is forcing all humanitarian organizations – including the Order of Malta – to find a new way to reach people in need while protecting their own staff.

Immediately after the outbreak of the conflict, the Order of Malta, in a huge joint effort, the most impressive since the Second World War, together with all its Associations, aid services and volunteers, took immediate action to bring all kinds of aid to Ukraine, a country in which the Order has been involved in humanitarian work for more than 30 years and with which has recently celebrated 15 years of diplomatic relations.

The Order has provided medical, social and psychological assistance, as well as safe shelter to displaced people in Ukraine and neighboring countries. Tons of food and humanitarian supplies have been delivered to Ukraine and distributed to more than 70 locations across the country. Under the coordination of Malteser International, the international aid service of the Order of Malta, since the beginning of the war in February 2022, logistics and medical assistance have been provided, meanwhile hot meals were distributed at border crossings, shelters and railway stations. Since the escalation of the conflict, relief efforts have also been expanded to the eastern and southern regions, providing more than 300,000 people with critical supplies such as food and generators.
